WHAT IS A FORMULA
A formula is a statement or expression that is typed into a cell in order for excel to perform a calculation. User defined formulae are those formulae that the user (you) construct (make up) for your self. Because of this, user defined formulae are more prone to errors because it relies heavily on the user's (your) ability to create sound mathematical statements. the user will therefor be required to have an excellent understanding of mathematical rules and principles (including but not limited to BOMDAS) in order to write user defined formulae well.
In mathematics we place the equal sign at the end of a mathematical statement to show that it needs to be calculated e.g. 2+2=
However, in Excel, the equal sign must be placed in front of the statement so that the software reads it as a formula e.g. =2+2
