Computer Network
When computers are joined together they form a computer network so they can transmit data to other computers. computers are linked in different ways or configurations to transmit data. Two configurations are:
1. Point to point- which is when there is a direct link between two computers on a network
2. Broadcast- which is when one computer is linked to many computers and is used to transmit data to all of them
Types of Computer Network Communication Channels
The two most basic types of computer network are Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). Muschett High uses a Local Area Network (LAN) because we are located in one geographic area. Other businesses that are spread over a large geographic area for example an airline which operates in different countries, can be linked in a Wide Area Network (WAN).
any computer that is not connected to a network is called a Stand-Alone. Stand-alone computer must share their data via email or a storage media
Communication Channels
The method used to transmit data is referred as the communication channel. Characteristics of communications channels include transmission mode, direction of data flow, communication channels and transmission speed.
